Foot Surgery 

If following assessment - a surgical opinion is indicated, we can recommend a number of options, one of which would be to consult with a Private specialist Foot and Ankle surgeon. We recommend Mr David Townsend FRCS at Northern Foot and Ankle Surgery.

Mr Townshend was born in Edinburgh and graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1997. After a research fellowship in New Zealand he returned to the North East for Higher Surgical Training. In 2009 he undertook a years specialist fellowship in Reconstructive Foot and Ankle surgery at the University of Brtish Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. Mr Townshend has been a Consultant at the Northumbria NHS Healthcare Trust since 2010 offering a specialist foot and ankle practice.

Mr Townshend can offer expertise in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery including simple forefoot surgeries (eg bunions and hammer toes), minimally invasive foot surgery, sports foot and ankle surgery, ankle arthritis including arthroscopic ankle fusion, total ankle replacement and revision (re-do) total ankle replacement.

Sports Injuries
If your sports Injury necessitates  consulting a sports Physician, with rapid access to Diagnostic Ultrasound, we recommend Dr Paul Catterson at  Newcastle Sports Medicine.
Dr Catterson at graduated in Medicine at Newcastle University in 1999, becoming a full time Emergency Medicine Consultant in 2008. He received his Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine from Bath University in 2007 and began working full time in elite sport in 2009. He is the Sports Doctor for Newcastle united and refers first team players to the North East Foot Centre.

We have worked on athletes as a multidiscilinary team with Salwa Bowen and have been impressed by Salwa's experience backed up with a willingness to go the extra mile for her clients.

Background: Salwa is a highly specialised practitioner in physiotherapy with over 22 years of extensive experience working in the professional sport industry.

Since qualifying in 1996 with a BSc(Hons) in Physiotherapy, Salwa Bowen joined the professional support team at the Newcastle Falcons Academy whilst continuing to undertake primary, musculoskeletal care within the NHS.

In 2002 a full-time role with Newcastle Falcons 1st team was offered and accepted which coincided with the most successful period in the team’s history. Huge knowledge of the elite game was gained during this period, a period in which the Newcastle Falcons had international players of the caliber and world class reputations of Jonny Wilkinson, Matt Burke and Carl Hayman.

Through out Salwa’s time at Northumbria University she has managed private sports injury and MSK clinic’s.

She has a huge interest in sport medicine and sport science, hence her clinical educator role with physiotherapy students and early qualified physiotherapists with an interest in sport. Helping them to gain confidence in the musculoskeletal assessment of sport injuries, improving their clinical reasoning skills, their manual therapy techniques, treatment plans and rehabilitation programmes. In addition to teaching and presentation work in the sports medicine field.

Accredited Member of the Chartered Physiotherapists in Sport & Exercise medicine
Salwa is an accredited member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapist in Sport and Exercise Medicine-an internationally recognised specialist group of Physiotherapist working in Sport.

Research in sport and exercise medicine is the next step for Salwa. In addition to embarking on a Post Graduate Certification (PG Cert) in Musculoskeletal Diagnostic Ultrasound. Her aspiration is to complete a fellowship or PhD programme in the Sports Medicine field.
